Fault Help

Common or potential faults associated with the French & Italian range.

Having worked with our chosen marques for quite some time now, it stands to reason that we have come across a whole plethora of faults, failures and potential automotive hiccups. Sometimes they are quite clearly due to a lack of maintenance. Others are due to poor design. Then there is just bad luck.

Here follows a list (in no particular order) of some of the more common occurrences we have encountered. Included are our comments and/or opinions as to how 'we' have dealt with the situation or believe would or could be an effective solution. Our ramblings are by no means a substitute for competent professional diagnosis and should be regarded as bodhi for interested parties.

EGR valves and limp mode (frustrating)

Thursday, 12 January 2017  |  Stu

Affecting: 1.6Hdi

A very common symptom we are presented with quite often is a report of ABS or ESP fault, Handbrake fault, maybe depollution fault and sometimes engine loses power or goes into 'limp mode'.

The fault may go away if you stop and restart the engine. The fault can be due to an EGR valve sticking. The engine computer tells the ABS computer that it's information is not valid and the handbrake computer needs information from the ABS so it also reports a fault because it is a secondary brake and may have safety implications. When you restart the engine, the EGR valve goes through a cleaning routine and frees off for a while.

Diagnosis is reasonably easy and it's a case of replacing the EGR valve.
