If you wish to avoid replacement of air spring units, a faulty compressor or Electronic control Unit, then this may be of interest.

Although it is an efficient system when it is working correctly, you have no doubt discovered by now that it is an expensive system to be constantly repairing.

To that end we have put together a kit comprising of:


  • 2x Steel coil springs
  • 2x Spring seats
  • 2x Bump stops

This is all that is required to carry out a conversion that will eliminate the need to replace air springs or compressor permanently. Changing from one to the other is relatively straightforward. If you have access to a wheel-free ramp and a good spring compressor the conversion is very straightforward. Releasing the shock absorbers greatly simplifies the procedure by allowing the trailing arms to be lowered right down giving better access to the airbags and allowing a simple exchange. If you do not have access to a wheel-free ramp no specialist tools are required other than a decent spring compressor and a pair of good quality axle stands. The old airbags can be decompressed if required and squashed down allowing removal. The steel springs can be placed utilising the spring compressor.

Particular attention however MUST be paid to the attitude of the new springs and seats in relation to the vehicle. Although not dangerous, incorrectly positioned springs can potentially generate an annoying twanging sound when driven over rough ground.   

Study the photographs. Alignment should be carried out by positioning the LOWER end of the spring. Note that the springs are asymmetric. The lower 'tail' of the coil should be aimed toward the REAR of the vehicle. Ensure that the spring sits snugly into the lower black plastic seat and that the upper seat / bumpstop is located into the upper spring coil. Both springs are mounted in identically despite their asymmetry. 

Dashboard warning 

This will be illuminated because either the system is defective OR the body computer has noticed that the suspension is missing. This can either be completely ignored or you can have the vehicle configuration altered so that the body computer does not look for pneumatic suspension. This reconfiguration can only be carried out by using the Citroen Lexia or Diagbox diagnostic equipment. Your main dealer 'may' carry this out for you if they know how, but your Citroen Specialist may be the better bet. Reconfiguration should take no longer than a half hour. Don't let anyone convince you that it will take longer for any reason. It won't.

We are often asked:

  1. Should I inform my insurance company? Well, the clear answer to that is Yes you should because technically it is a modification. That said, a qualified MOT tester in a Citroen dealership would struggle to tell our conversion from a factory built C4 Picasso with steel springs.
  2. What have insurance companies said to people who have broken down and confessed? Of the few that have cracked, there has been no extra charge that we have heard about. But we haven't spoken to everybody. After all there are over 3000 of you out there.
  3. I can't sleep at night, what shall I tell my insurance company? As a guide, let the conversation run as follows: "I am not comfortable driving a car that is potentially unreliable therefore potentially unsafe. This new steel system operates in exactly the same way and mimics that of a C4 Picasso that was built with steel springs from the factory, only now the quality of steel is far better than original so therefore safer, more reliable and less likely to cause a suspension failure related incident. To your advantage, if I were to have an accident that was bad enough to damage my rear suspension, the cost of repairs will now be a tiny fraction of those compared to any repairs on a pneumatic system. In effect Mr Insurance man sir I am potentially saving your company a lot of money. So really, if anything you should be reducing my premium.

Please be aware that all international deliveries will require a signature, therefore we cannot request that goods be "left behind a woodstore" for example. We are however very happy to deliver to an alternative address such as a nieghbour or your place of work.

When will my order arrive?


UK mainland addresses will usually enjoy next day delivery by Fedex. This however, is NOT guaranteed. Due to a plethora of reasons, pick ups from us can be early late or not at all depending on local conditions. Deliveries can also be delayed in transit. This is of course totally out of our control. We therefore suggest ordering early where possible to avoid disappointment.

International addresses. This is even harder to predict. However, shipments to Australasia generally arrive within 4 to 7 days if all goes well. Destinations closer to the UK you would imagine would be a little quicker. Sadly that is not always the case. Due to customs backlogs and other administrative bottlenecks, delays are quite possible. That said, a 2 day delivery to Germany for example is not uncommon.

When thinking about carriage, please hope for the best but prepare for the worst. 


  • Most UK sourced items are available to us within a couple of working days.
  • Citroen and Peugeot items back ordered from France around 5 - 30 days
  • Fiat and Alfa Romeo items Ex Italy are usually 7 to 10 working days
  • We will advise an ETA prior to placing a special order.
  • Back ordered items vary dramatically.

Almost certainly, but not to us. Tax rates vary from region to region. We suggest you do a little research on your local laws, rules and regulations. This will ensure there are no nasty surprises before your order is delivered.
